US-based biorefinery owner and operator Renewable Energy Group (REG) celebrated the completion of upgrades at its Emden, Germany biorefinery Wednesday.
The investment, which totaled 2.5mn euros, included the installation of a new biodiesel distillation column and a thermal oil heater.
“This investment is another milestone in REG’s European strategy to be a leader in delivering high-quality biofuels,” said REG Energy Europe vice president Jean Scemama.
“Within this strategy, Emden is positioned to perform well with deep water access to receive and deliver products by vessel and can now meet or exceed the highest quality standards required by our customers.”
The company acquired the Emden biorefinery in January 2017, as part of its initial majority investment in Petrotec AG.
The Emden facility, along with two additional REG-operated German biorefineries in Oeding and Burlo, have an estimated nameplate biodiesel production capacity of 50mn gallons annually.
